In Ayurveda, energy comes in the form of three vital essences: Prana, Tejas, and Ojas. Prana is the primal life force and the subtle form of the Vata dosha (air and space constitution). It is carried into the body when we breathe and eat. Tejas is often described as the ‘light (or fire) of our intelligence’ and is the subtle form of the Pitta dosha (fire and water constitution). Tejas governs perception, consciousness and judgment. Ojas is the subtle form of the Kapha dosha (water and earth constitution) and is our life’s energy reserve, stability and endurance. All three of these essences are important for both physical and mental health.
